Traveling used to be a big deal. I know its still a big deal now but it wasn’t like it was today where you can just Snap your peeps when you land. As a matter of fact, the U.S. postal system was established in 1775, so it looks like the very first study abroad students needed to take the trip without even communicating with their family. Can you imagine that? I talk about this in another post but a big reason why students don’t study abroad is they miss their loved ones. But what I tell those people is think about what someone in, even the 90’s had to go through when studying abroad as opposed to now. Maybe a little email, a little IM, but no Skype or Facetime, and certainly no social media. We’ve got it easy now, made in the shade.
You’ve heard the old adage that ‘history repeats itself.’ Well, if the history of study abroad repeats itself we should consider ourselves lucky. There are entire organizations that and people that eat, sleep, and breathe international education. Just look at some of the people I follow on my Twitter page and you will see what I am talking about.
